Utah Public Health Lab Installs Medical Waste Incinerator for Safe Animal Waste Disposal

At Incinerator Pros, we specialize in designing and delivering high-performance medical waste incinerators for laboratories, hospitals, and clinics across North America. Recently, we completed a turnkey installation for the Utah Public Health Laboratory (UPHL)—a facility critical to disease surveillance and rabies testing in the state.

The Challenge: Safe Disposal of Biohazard Waste from Rabies Testing

UPHL is Utah’s reference lab for infectious disease testing and the only laboratory in the state equipped to detect the rabies virus in animal brain tissue. Every month, the lab receives hundreds of submissions—including animal heads, entire bats, and dried blood spot (DBS) cards—for rabies testing.

To handle the volume and biohazard nature of the materials, UPHL required a lab incinerator capable of:

  • Safely processing up to 1,000 lbs of animal tissue and diagnostic material per month
  • Operating under Utah’s Small Source Exemption environmental guidelines
  • Delivering full sterilization of all organic material, including bone and tissue
  • Running efficiently in a confined, lab-based setting with minimal oversight

The Solution: C12-400 Natural Gas Fired Lab Incinerator

After a detailed consultation, Incinerator Pros supplied and installed the C12-400 natural gas-fired incineration system, engineered specifically for medical and laboratory applications. This lab incinerator features:

  • A dual-burner configuration for high-efficiency combustion
  • A 4 cu. ft. secondary chamber for thorough destruction of biohazards
  • Digital timers and automatic temperature control for consistent, safe operation
  • A vertical stack system to meet local air quality compliance

This system ensures that all organic materials—including bone, tissue, and contaminated paper products—are completely reduced to sterile ash. Even large bones are incinerated to a state where they easily crumble, leaving no biohazard risk behind.

Turnkey Installation and On-Site Training

As with all our hospital incinerator and clinic incinerator installations, Incinerator Pros managed the entire project lifecycle:

  • Delivered and installed the incinerator on-site at the UPHL facility
  • Integrated all gas and electrical systems
  • Performed full system commissioning
  • Trained UPHL staff to ensure safe and confident day-to-day operation

The lab was able to proceed quickly thanks to its pre-approved budget and regulatory exemptions, allowing our team to install and commission the system without delay.
